AFRICAN UNION FOLLOW-UP MISSION COMMENDS IEC LESOTHO ON PROGRESS IN IMPLEMENTING 2022 ELECTION RECOMMENDATIONS

Maseru, Lesotho | 2 July 2026 – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of the Kingdom of Lesotho successfully hosted the African Union (AU) Follow-up Mission from 30 June to 2 July 2026 to review progress made in implementing recommendations issued by the African Union Election Observation Mission following the 7 October 2022 National Assembly Elections.

“The implementation of election observation recommendations is not merely an institutional obligation; it is an Investment In Strengthening Democracy, enhancing public trust, and ensuring continuous improvement in electoral processes. The Commission remains committed to collaboration with all stakeholders in advancing democratic governance.”

IEC opens Mohale's Hoek regional office to bring electoral services closer to electorate (30 June 2026)

Mohale’s hoek, Lesotho | 30 June 2026 – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) today officially opened its new Regional Office in Mohale’s Hoek, marking another important milestone in the Commission’s ongoing efforts to decentralise electoral services and strengthen its presence across Lesotho.

The Commission reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to delivering credible, inclusive and professionally managed electoral processes, noting that a strong regional presence is essential for building public confidence and supporting democratic governance.

The Chairperson further stressed that maintaining trust in the electoral system requires continuous collaboration between the Commission, political parties, local authorities, Civil Society Organisations and communities. Such partnerships remain fundamental to promoting peaceful, transparent and credible elections.

Maseru | 15 June 2026 – The assessment visits are intended to evaluate constituency readiness, engage with IEC staff and key stakeholders, assess operational requirements, and identify any logistical or administrative issues that may require attention ahead of the commencement of the registration exercise. The programme forms part of the Commission’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that all eligible Basotho are provided with adequate opportunities to register and fully participate in the democratic process.
